Hypnosis – The Truth Behind All The Misconceptions

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Provided below are some general misconceptions prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It is a very easy technique, which can be explained easily with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully experiencing its power in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.

That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another misconception that has been circulating for quite some time now. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely conscious of the happenings around him. That individual is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept new inputs easily.

Another myth, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of humans. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different characters.

Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like an engagement with the self without any external interaction involved. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.

A sizeable number of people believe that it is impossible to bring about changes in one’s looks and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is obviously not wizardry that it can transform the physique of a person on its own. But by mentally conditioning a person to give up addictive habits like overeating and constant smoking, and by heightening one’s motivation levels, hypnosis can bring about vital physical changes in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a happy and satisfying life, and thus one should not pay attention to the myths, and go for hypnotic sessions with an open mind.
