What You Really Need to Know Before You Start on EBay

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

For many people, starting their own online business can seem an insurmountable problem; if this describes you, eBay may be the place to test the waters of eBay home business. One reason is simply that you can make extra money, but it also puts you at no or very little risk; third, it gives you chance to experience first hand what it is like to start doing business. Before you get going, however, I’d like to take a moment to discuss some of aspects of eBay It think you be aware of before you start putting up auctions.

Do you know what you want to sell? You would be surprised at how many newcomers haven’t thought that through. Don’t worry if you haven’t, but it is a good idea to consider that as that will have a lot to do with your future success. EBay is great for selling almost any product, but if you are going into business, it is normally considered standard practice to confine your selling to a particular niche; not that you can’t expand from their or switch niches entirely later on. Remember, you can always experiment and change your products around, but as mentioned before, at some point you will want to focus on a particular niche. What you have to gain from this is customer loyalty and trust as buyers enjoyed their auction experience with you will come back. Remember, trust and loyalty can be everything.

Usually when trying to figure out what to sell, newcomers are just told to sell something they know about–this is the common advice. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That can be one approach, but really, that can be easier said than done. But what if you can’t? Another entry point that works for many is to start with an interest or to start with something you would like to be interested in. Even if you don’t know very much about the products, if you are interested, you will be able to learn enough to sell them convincingly on eBay.

One thing I need to mention is that although being stuck for ideas of what to sell is not a big deal, in my opinion you have to at least be willing to be interested and if not, eBay may not be right for you. For inspiration, you can make a list of the kinds of things you like, visit stores and websites, and talk to friends and family. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, don’t worry; as I mentioned a moment ago, in the beginning it is enough to be interested, and that’s why my standard advice at this point is just to sell other peoples’ stuff–sell their junk. Almost anything will sell on eBay–take your friends’ and neighbors’ stuff and put it up for sale and see how it goes. The point of doing this is that after doing a few auctions the whole process will begin to make more sense, and you will be able to think more clearly about what you want to sell; and who knows, you may decide to stick with “junk,” and you wouldn’t be the only one to make a fortune doing so.

When you get to the point of thinking about business and profit, you will, of course, want to consider products that have a reasonable chance of selling consistently well. If an item you are interested in is not well-know, don’t worry as that is not necessarily important. EBay is the world’s largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. Keep in mind that eBay is great market place for collectors–so there is a market for obscure items, and eBay is the perfect place to sell them.

One other thing I want to mention is not something that you will have to think about right away, but once you do start making money, you will need to declare it as income on your tax returns (if you live in the United States). If you think that you are going to sell on a regular basis, then it would probably be a good idea to get a sales tax permit. The sales tax permit is the license that your state gives you that allows you to purchase wholesale items without paying sales tax; you charge your buyers from your state of residence sales tax, which you later remit to your state treasury. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.

Keep in mind that there are good days and bad days on eBay. Everyone has them. Unfortunately, no one’s auctions make a profit every time, and as a business person, you will learn how to predict losses as well as financial wins. Never stop learning and never give up–those are your real keys to success on eBay. Anyone can sell on eBay if they want to, and almost anything can be sold. Although eBay will not work out for everyone who tries to give it a go, it is one of the most accessible means of starting out in business for yourself available, and best of all, you risk practically nothing in giving it a try. The next step is to take action–you could have an auction up today!
