How Programs You Are Not Using Are To Blame For Your Computer Running Slow

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Isn’t it funny how one day your computer can be running smoothly and then in a few months it can slow down to the point where you just want to throw it out the window? The real question is – exactly why did it slow down? Well the answer isn’t clear cut and easy to digest but most of it has to deal with how the operating system of your computer works. Most Windows based operating systems are designed to work as efficiently as possible, but that unfortunately isn’t the case in real life. What happens is that after time your computer starts to build up junk in many different areas and this is what slows it down (for the most part). All you need to do to make it faster is to remove the junk. The only problem is finding all of the areas that the junk builds up and also removing it.

Where are the areas that junk builds up? There simply are too many to discuss in this article and there also is to many areas that you can tune to make your computer faster so what were going to do is focus on just one area so you have somewhere to start. Start with removing programs that you don’t need anymore. Why? Most people will download a program and then when they realize that they don’t need it anymore they will just leave it on their computer and move on. Why is this bad? First off, that program is taking up space on your hard drive but more importantly it is most likely running in the background of your computer and using up resources that you can be using.

Just to be on the safe side here, don’t remove a program if you don’t know what it is or what it does – your computer might actually be using it. Only remove a program if you know what it is and if you know for sure that your computer doesn’t need it. Here’s how you do it:

For those of you using Windows XP start off by clicking the Start button, clicking on the Control Panel icon and clicking on the Add or Remove Programs. Now just wait a little while since the list has to be created (basically the mor eprograms on your computer the longer it will take to populate). All that’s left to do now is to just remove the programs that you don’t need. To do this, just click on the program that you don’t need and selecting Change/Remove and following through with the rest of the removal process.

If you are Windows Vista user, click Start, go to Control Panel and make sure that at the top of the window that you have “Classic View” selected. Double click on the Programs and Features button (wait a few seconds for your programs to come up) and just select the programs that you don’t need and select Uninstall to remove them. Remember to only remove programs if you what they are and if you know that you don’t need them.

How Your Computer Looks Might Be To Blame For It Running Slow

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Once of the biggest reasons as to why your computer runs slow has to do with your computer being setup to “look pretty”. A lot of your computers resources are being used to make the interface look good and if you were to tune these down, then your computer might be able to run a bit faster.

If you tune it down, you will get a small performance boost. This is especially true if you are a Windows Vista user (Vista has a lot of unnecessary programs that run in the back ground that are designed to just make the operating system look nice. By disabling them you will get a small performance boost). If your curious about this, here is how to do it:

For those Windows XP users out there just click Start right click on My Computer and select Properties. Now select the Advanced tab and on the area where it says “Performance”, double click Settings. Now, in the Visual Effects tab a tthe top of the screen select Adjust For Best Performance. See, what you are now doing is forcing Windows XP to look more like Windows 98. For those of you what would like your computer to look somewhat good and still be tuned for performance just select the Custom box, make sure that all of the other boxes are selected and scroll down to the bottom. Now just select “Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons”. All you have to do now is just select Apply and then OK.

If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, right click on Computer and select Properties. On the left hand side, select Advanced System Settings. In the advanced tab where it says Performance, click on the Settings button. Now in the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust For Best Performance. This will make Vista look more like Windows 98. If you would like to keep the way that Vista looks, and still have your computers look tuned for performance, just select the Custom box, make sure that everything is checked off and then select the box that says “Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons”. Click Apply and then OK.

So how much of a performance boost should you expect? Well that varies greatly. I have used this technique on a lot of slow computers and what I have realized is that some of them will be a lot faster and others you might not even notice that there was a difference. For the most part, you really aren’t loosing anything by trying this “tune up” out so you might as well give it a shot. If you don’t like the way that your computer look after doing this, then just change it back to the way that it was before you started to make changes.

2 Small Tweaks To Get More Performance Out Of Windows Vista

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Windows Vista has many different effects and features that makes it very unique. The only problem is that the same features that makes it so unique are the same things that are usually robbing it of resources – resources that you could be using to get more done in less time. For the purpose of this article I am going to show you two ways to make your Windows Vista perform a bit faster but the down side to this is that you are going to have to sacrifice some of Vistas looks to get a resource boost. For the most part, the average user has absolutely no use for any of Vistas fancy looks so you should be just fine when you remove them.

If you are using Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate, chances are that you have the Aero effect turned on. The Aero effect is designed to make your computer’s windows have more of a glass like effect to them, which no one really needs at all. It also enables Windows Flip 3D which is something that no one really needs (if you don’t know what Windows Flip 3D is, open a few windows, hold the Windows Button down and press the Tab button. You should be able to cycle through all of your currently opened windows in a fancy format). These features are really just pointless things that Windows has added to make your computer look really cool. Here’s how to get rid of the Aero effect:

What your going to want to do now is to click Start, click on the Control Panel and then on the left hand side make sure that the Control Panel Home is selected. Now click on Appearance and Personalize, click on the Personalize link, click on the Windows Color and Appearance and at the bottom of the window select “Open classic appearance properties for more color options”. A new window should appear and in this window where it has the Color Scheme drop down box just select Windows Vista Basic. Now click Apply and then OK and this should turn off the Aero effect.

Now the next thing that you most likely will not need that Vista has is the sidebar. Unless you actually use the gadgets on the sidebar regularly then I highly suggest that you completely get rid of it. In practical situations it really serves no purpose for the normal person other than making your computers look pretty. Here’s how its done:Right click on the windows sidebar icon in the System Tray (the system tray is that little group of icons next to your clock) and select properties. Now when you are in the Windows Sidebar Properties dialog box, just uncheck the box that says “Start Sidebar when Windows Starts” and select Apply and then OK. Now all you have to do is to just right click on the Windows Sidebar Icon in the system tray again and hit Exit.

By doing both of these things you have now given yourself some more resources to use which in the long run will make your computer faster.

Saving Important Information With Registry Cleaners

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Anyone who is familiar with computers is well aware of the registry in their machine. It is the database, sometimes called the brain of the computer, and holds all the memory of what is entered in the machine. Registry cleaners are software specifically designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system to keep it running smoothly.

Registry in this PC is responsible for holding a huge number of settings and can lead to a large amount of problems if it is not cleaned on a regular basis. Things such as broken links, invalid entries, missing references and other such things can occur. Finding the right registry cleaner for this task is very important.

Problems sometimes encountered with the registry can include such things as the system crashing, numerous errors in operation and the computer suddenly ‘freezing up’. This causes not only an interruption of one’s work but complete frustration with the breakdown of the system. Being in the middle of important work and suddenly have a blank screen can be devastating.

The software that has been developed to clean the computer registry has been carefully put together to remove such things as something left over from previous software, missing or corrupt hardware drivers and numerous other problems. These things can increase the registry bulk and slow down or stop the computer.

There are many registry cleaners on the market today. They are geared to repair many of the problems causing a disruption of the system. Registry companies say that these products can clean out the whole system and get it running like new again when properly applied.

The average user of a computer knows very little about the inner working of the machine. When something goes wrong the first thing most people do is to call a technician who is an expert in the field. Many times, after an examination, he or she will use this software to clear up the problem.

Anyone who has examined the inside of a computer realizes how complex the entire machine is, but especially the database. Trying to clean the various components of this apparatus without the proper software would not only be impractical but could damage it beyond repair. In addition, using the correct software will relieve one’s mind regarding future problems.

Using registry cleaners to keep one’s computer in tiptop form makes sense when one realizes the huge amount of information that is stored in its databank. In years gone by this amount of information would take months and possibly years to produce by hand. No one wishes to do that currently so keeping this storage of information intact is essential for one’s needs.

In simpler terms, the registry keeps track of your system settings and hardware configuration. It also keeps track of computer file associations, user preferences, and your computer downloaded software.

This complicated system, the registry, can become a tangled configuration of settings, information, and engineering. The result of the complicated entanglement could mean a slower running system and a less than reliable computer. It is not uncommon for your computer registry to grow to a large unmanageable size over time.

This can lead to an unstable computer. If your system is slow to start up, this might be one symptom of an over sized registry. When you pare down your registry, your computer will run faster. This is the simple explanation of what is actually a very complicated process.

If you need to free up space on your hard drive, you can do so by deleting temporary files. Some people like to leave their recycle bin intact in case they need to recover a file they deleted. But you can safely empty your recycle bin if you know you no longer need the files in the bin.

You can also freely delete files from your recycle bin if you are sure you will not need those files any longer. Read the reviews of all the registry cleaning software you are thinking of using. Registry Cleaners Will Certainly Provide Numerous Benefits

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Registry cleaners are special software programs that help resolve problems with the Windows operating system. These software programs will help in removing items that are either unwanted or redundant and in this way restores the Windows registry to its proper state. Though it pays to use such software, there are nevertheless many that argue that they are not necessary or even useful.

Registry cleaners have to provide solutions related to removing configuration data from a Windows registry that is not required or which is unwanted by the operating system. The data to be removed can be anything including information left over by software that is yet to be uninstalled from the computer. In addition the data can be any piece of information that is not required or it could even be certain settings that are required by malware. By cleaning out the registry it is possible, after scanning the registry, to pick out values that are not required and which can then be repaired or deleted.

These cleaning programs provide many benefits but the most notable benefit is that of helping to ensure that your computer runs more efficiently after the cleaning has been affected. The registry holds much complex and voluminous information that cannot be searched by manual means.

This is why it is necessary to automate the search procedure which registry cleaners are able to do very well. They will locate information and then resolve issues and in this way will help to keep a computer functioning at peak levels.

Once the registry keys are corrected the computer will work much more efficiently and this is why cleaner programs are so much in demand. Besides cleaning up the registry, these programs can also back up the computer hard drive and they will help in restoring certain kinds of functions to ensure that the registry is restored to its normal state.

For people that add and remove programs often there is need to use the cleaning software applications in order to keep the registry clean and uncluttered with useless information.

There are a few downsides to using such software as well. The biggest such downside is that the cleaner does not address the severity of the fault and can easily flag an error (erroneously) as being critical when in actual fact there is nothing serious wrong. So, before using such software, it makes sense to determine whether using such programs is desirable or even necessary.
