Thinking About Importing USA Auto Salvage

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The sheer volume of cars owned by the residents of the USA, together with the almost essential ownership requirements of a vehicle to have form of transport, suggests that when looking to buy auto salvage the USA may have it all.

So before you jump on a flight to State near you, expecting to simply part with some cash and buy your first USA auto salvage project think again. There are certain regulations required before you get access to bidding within these salvage auctions.

Unlike the UK the USA allows certain cars to be sold for export only. This means the insurance companies have deemed the car un-repairable to be safe on USA roads, but we all know this is just a case of money and because cars are so much cheaper in the USA, bargains can be had when comparing prices of salvage to other countries. This means you have pretty much excluded much of American bidders looking to speculate.

You still can’t just turn up or log into these sales, there is still some prep work and some conditions to make sure you can bid on these vehicles for export. You may have to leave a deposit first just in case you default on the final payment, and of course prove you don’t live in the States. The auction houses tend to deal with the trade, so quick payment is part of the deal.

The next option is an online service called SalvageSpareFinder. They will give you access to most cars being sold by the largest salvage auction yard company in the USA. You get a login and bid live against other bidders. You would be surprised that even large auction yards like this have on hand, people who will ship the vehicle direct to shipping export docks, ready to be shipped to your home country.

OK once the car is bought the export process begins. First you need to get the vehicle from the auction yard to a dockside big enough for international tanker ships. This is normally very easy, as these Action houses tend to have companies they work with. Then you will need to employ an export shipping agent, who will put your vehicle in a container and ship it to your local dock in your country.

If this was not enough, you will have to consider any taxes involved to import your chosen auto salvage. This could be import tax, or even some sort of sale tax, obviously the rates are different depending on what your country of residence charges.
