This printing technology uses oil-based ink, which the water can not dissolve. In offset printing, rubber blankets play a transitional role in copying the image on the paper, which is to begin with on the plate.
The first step is preparing the images. When offset printing began, the images had to be made by the use of film negatives and they were later transferred to aluminum plates. This is no longer required as the technology is available for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. The subsequent step is to transfer the plate on to a cylinder such that it is spot on. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. While the ink gets stuck to the image, the water gets stuck to that part of the plate which has no image so that the ink does not spill beyond the image.
The image is then transferred from the plates to the rubber blanket rolled on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. The image is now printed with its correct side looking up by cutting sheets of papers into appropriate size and placing them on a third cylinder.
Last steps of the printing job involve things such as stapling, gluing or arranging the printed sheets in line with the instructions of the customer, and any printing company should easily manage these.
